Whether I read the comments on youtube videos related to a political event, discussions on news articles, or just the hate mail people send me because they feel that insulting the country I was born in should somehow irritate me, I wonder, are the majority of people in the world filled with so much hatred? While it is true that I am strongly against and actually very disgusted by it, it does not mean I hate people who are brainwashed to believe it. In fact, the main reason I am against religion is the hatred, animosity and division that it creates, all the falsehood and archaic garbage that religion advocates only affirms my stance against it but it is not the main reason I am against it. Despite this strong outlook, I do not hate individuals who practice religion. In fact I know many good hearted loving individuals who are Muslim, Christian, Jewish, or belong to another religious group, many of them are my friends and family. However, that does not change the fact that their holy books are filled with violence, outdated nonsense, and intolerance, which any individual can take literally and live by if they want to be religious, and for this reason I reserve the right to always put religion down. But back to my main inquiry, reading all the remarks online that are filled with bitterness and endorse extreme hostility, do you think that the world is filled with this much hatred and that most people just hide it on day to day basis? Are we surrounded by hate without even knowing it, or do you think these are the works of a small group of internet trolls? One would only hope for the latter.

Sometimes I get so fed up with the intolerance and bigotry I see around me every single day that I automatically assume the worst; that there is pretty much no hope for our future with the way people are growing so hateful so rapidly. But then I step back and take a deep breath. This always helps. It is then that I come to a different conclusion…well, maybe not a conclusion per se, but my perspective does change tremendously.

Basically, there has got to be more tolerant, loving, and respectful individuals than there are those bloated with hate and intolerance. It just cannot be the other way around, no way. One of the reasons it’s hard for us to see beyond the negativity, I think, is that well-intentioned individuals are often those who prefer to avoid conflict and stand aside instead. Of course, there are people who take a stand to do and say what is right on a regular basis, but the majority of humankind, I think, prefer not to get mixed up in certain situations, be it in the comment section of a youtube video or a real life situation. It’s far easier to watch over things in the corner than it is to become an active participant.

Why is this the case with so many of us? I don’t know. Maybe it’s the amount of negativity we are exposed to everyday through mainstream media? Look at the news. Here where I live (Chicago) it seems that 95% of the local “news” is a mix of reports on crimes and murders in the southside, your usual pathetic political finger-pointing, and shit that makes you question whether this is really the 21st century, followed by mind-numbing commercials…while so damn little, if any, is dedicated to the GOOD that takes place in communities here. Now I understand that we live in some crazy fucking times right now and it’s next to impossible to tell what’s to come tomorrow. Absolutely insane. Yes. But that’s certainly not the whole picture. People do fight back. They fight back all the time. We rally, we march, we protest. But again, the media is not very fond of that. Imagine if they did televise all the (often peaceful) protests that take place in communities. So many would feel empowered that like-minded people do indeed exist and they are out there despite potential risks. Those who were not even aware of the issue may research it and find something they want to become involved in.

Ok, this got off-topic quick. I don’t write often obviously haha. But I guess what I’m saying is: The seeming lack of tolerance and respect we see on the web (or on tv) should not dictate our perception of the amount of intolerance and racism that exists amongst us. Individuals with hateful viewpoints just like to make themselves heard a lot more than the peaceful ones. Because hate is sensationalized and not condemned by the mainstream media; sadly the main source of “information” for so many people.

Plus, internet trolls do run absolutely rampant these days, anyway.

(I’m sure I have over-simplified the shit out of this topic, but oh well.)

Oophagy, or egg eating, is a means of nutrition by which the developing embryos of some sharks eat their ‘potential siblings’ while still in the mother’s uterus. The above image is the embryo of Shortfin Mako Shark, Isurus oxyrinchus. Embryos of these species are ‘intra-uterine cannibals’. Individuals that have hatched inside the female shark eat successive batches of unfertilised eggs that are continuously ovlulated by the female.

Francisco de Goya, Berganza & Cañizares, also known as La Cocina de las Brujas (Witches´ Kitchen), 1797-1798.

According to writer Frank Irving, this work, erroneously known by the title of The Witches’ Kitchen (La cocina de las brujas), should in fact be called Berganza and Cañizares (Berganza y Cañizares), since it represents those two characters from one of the Exemplary Stories (Novelas Ejemplares) of Miguel de Cervantes (Alcalá de Henares, 1547-Madrid, 1616): The Deceitful Marriage and The Dogs’ Colloquy. Assuming this is true, this painting by Goya would be based on what is one of Spanish literature’s most famous episodes of witchcraft, and would represent Cervantes’ tale with only minor modifications.
The principal characters in the painting therefore are the dog Berganza and the witch Cañizares, who is explaining to the dog how to summon demons and make magic potions which give the power of flight. In the centre of the composition we can see the witch, with one leg kneeling on the floor and the other, which more closely resembles that of a goat, at a right angle. Her left hand is reaching into the jug in front of her whilst Berganza the dog, standing and with the left leg and right arm of a human being, watches as a billy goat flies off on a broomstick up the kitchen chimney, the place where magical rites were usually performed. The two figures standing on the left-hand side of the composition have been summoned by the witch and transformed into demons. Above them hang bones and skulls, as well as an oil lamp which lights the scene.
The message which both Cervantes and Goya set out to communicate with this scene is that a person’s imagination is capable of altering their sense of reality. They butt into your life, take a cheap shot at you and then disappear. They leer at you from tall buildings and make you feel small. They make flippant comments from buses that imply you’re not sexy enough and that all the fun is happening somewhere else. They are on TV making your girlfriend feel inadequate. They have access to the most sophisticated technology the world has ever seen and they bully you with it. They are The Advertisers and they are laughing at you.

You, however, are forbidden to touch them. Trademarks, intellectual property rights and copyright law mean advertisers can say what they like wherever they like with total impunity.

Fuck that. Any advert in a public space that gives you no choice whether you see it or not is yours. It’s yours to take, re-arrange and re-use. You can do whatever you like with it. Asking for permission is like asking to keep a rock someone just threw at your head.

You owe the companies nothing. Less than nothing, you especially don’t owe them any courtesy. They owe you. They have re-arranged the world to put themselves in front of you. They never asked for your permission, don’t even start asking for theirs.
”

- Banksy

Photo
